# Software Requirements Specification (SRS)

## When to Use

- During software planning when system behavior and constraints need a verifiable specification.
- When engineering and business stakeholders must agree interfaces and nonfunctional requirements.

## When NOT to Use

- To use a specification as technical design approval or test execution evidence.
- Do not use a completed template or example configuration as proof of fitness for the actual environment. See [Template as substitute for judgment](../../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#template-judgment).

## Pairs Well With

- [Business Requirements Document Template](../../../../../domains/measurement/project-lifecycle/02-planning/business-requirements/business_requirements_document_template.md).
- [Requirements Traceability Matrix Template](../../../../../domains/delivery/templates/traditional/Traditional/Process_Groups/Executing/requirements_traceability_matrix_template.md).

Selection context: Uncertainty domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md).

Authentication examples require security-owner approval for the actual assurance level and user population. Use the current [NIST authentication guidance](https://pages.nist.gov/800-63-4/sp800-63b.html) when applicable and specify the chosen policy and verification tests.

## SRS Writing Guidelines

1. **Use Clear Language**: Write requirements in clear, concise language. Avoid ambiguity and vague terms like "user-friendly," "fast," or "efficient."

2. **Make Requirements Testable**: Each requirement should be verifiable through testing. If you can't test it, it's not properly specified.

3. **Use "Shall" Statements**: Express requirements using "shall" to indicate mandatory requirements. Use "should" for recommended but not mandatory items.

4. **Be Specific**: Include measurable criteria whenever possible. Instead of saying "The system shall respond quickly," say "The system shall respond within 2 seconds under normal load conditions."

5. **Uniquely Identify Requirements**: Give each requirement a unique identifier to facilitate traceability and reference.

6. **Avoid Compound Requirements**: Each requirement should express a single capability or constraint. Split compound requirements into multiple distinct requirements.

7. **Use Consistent Terminology**: Maintain consistent terminology throughout the document. Create and refer to a glossary to ensure everyone understands terms the same way.

8. **Include Rationale When Helpful**: For complex or potentially controversial requirements, include a brief rationale explaining why the requirement exists.

9. **Specify Constraints Separately**: Clearly distinguish between what the system should do (functional requirements) and constraints on how it should do it (non-functional requirements).

10. **Involve Stakeholders**: Ensure relevant stakeholders review the requirements to confirm they accurately reflect the needs and expectations.
