--- title: "Quality Test Plan Template" methodology: "universal" complexity: "advanced" owner: "mirichard" updated: "2026-09-19" primary_principles: ["quality-by-design"] secondary_principles: ["evidence-based-decisions", "risk-optimization"] principle_rationale: "Defines bounded test coverage, entry and exit criteria and execution evidence so acceptance reflects the quality risks being evaluated." --- # Quality Test Plan Template ## When to Use - When defining a test plan for a bounded quality-validation exercise. - When test owners need objectives, coverage, entry and exit criteria, and execution evidence. ## When NOT to Use - As proof that tests were executed successfully merely because the plan is complete. - Do not represent author self-checks as independent or authorized approval. See [Self-approval](../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#self-approval). ## Pairs Well With - [Test Plan Template](../../../../domains/measurement/industry-specializations/information-technology/software-development/test_plan_template.md). - [Requirements Traceability Matrix Template](../../../../domains/delivery/templates/traditional/Traditional/Process_Groups/Executing/requirements_traceability_matrix_template.md). Selection context: Uncertainty domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md). ## Overview This document outlines the strategy and activities to verify that the product or solution meets defined quality standards before release. It supports informed decision-making regarding readiness and ensures alignment between stakeholders, testers, and delivery teams. ## Test Objectives - Validate that critical functionality performs as expected under defined conditions - Detect and document defects early in the delivery cycle - Provide data for go/no-go decisions - Support compliance, audit, or regulatory requirements (if applicable) ## Scope ### In Scope Tailor and approve the following example scope before execution: - Core system functionality - APIs and integrations - User interface flows - Security and access controls ### Out of Scope These are candidate exclusions, not default waivers. Record risk, rationale, and approval for each exclusion: - Legacy system regression outside core workflows - Performance testing beyond baseline metrics ## Test Items - Application modules or features (list specific components) - Data sets (e.g., synthetic user records, product SKUs) - Interfaces or third-party tools ## Types of Testing - **Functional Testing:** Verify individual feature behavior against requirements - **Regression Testing:** Confirm existing functionality is unaffected by changes - **Integration Testing:** Validate data and process flow between components - **User Acceptance Testing (UAT):** End-user validation against business scenarios - **Non-Functional Testing:** Select performance, accessibility, usability, and security checks based on requirements and risk; document and approve any exclusions ## Entry Criteria - Development complete and code committed - Environments deployed and accessible - Test data prepared - All critical defects from prior test cycles resolved ## Exit Criteria - All planned test cases executed with retained results; blocked or omitted cases documented and dispositioned - No critical or high-severity defects remain open - UAT sign-off obtained from business stakeholders ## Test Approach - Manual test execution with supporting test scripts - Use of test case management tools (e.g., TestRail, Zephyr) - Daily triage meetings for defect resolution - Agile teams to test during sprint (if applicable) ## Coverage and execution evidence | Requirement / risk | Test case | Expected result | Actual result and evidence | Defect / disposition | |---|---|---|---|---| | [ID] | [Case] | [Result] | [Record] | [ID / decision] | ## Environment & Tools - Test Environment: [Environment Name/URL] - Tools: [Jira for defect tracking, GitHub for source control, CI/CD pipeline name] ## Risks & Mitigation | Risk | Likelihood | Impact | Mitigation | |------|------------|--------|------------| | Environment instability | Medium | High | Schedule buffer; early validation | | Unclear requirements | High | Medium | Review sessions with BAs; traceability matrix | | Test data unavailability | Medium | Medium | Create mocks; request from upstream teams early | ## Roles & Responsibilities | Role | Responsibility | |------|----------------| | QA Lead | Owns test plan, reporting, coordination | | Testers | Execute cases, log defects, verify fixes | | Business SME | Provide UAT feedback, validate results | | Dev Lead | Triage and fix defects, support testers | ## Approval & Sign-Off | Name | Role | Signature | Date | |------|------|-----------|------| | | | | | | | | | | --- **Instructions for Use:** - Replace bracketed placeholders with project-specific information - Add or remove sections as needed based on project size and methodology
