# OKR Template for Product Owners
## When to Use
- When a product or team needs a small set of measurable outcome objectives.
- When reviews should adjust priorities based on key-result evidence.
## When NOT to Use
- To label a task list as outcomes or treat numeric targets as guaranteed benefits.
- Do not infer realized value from completed outputs, spending, or activity counts. See [Value equals output](../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#value-output).
## Pairs Well With
- [Product Vision Template](../../../../domains/uncertainty/role-based-toolkits/product-owner/product-vision-template.md).
- [Benefits Review Template](../../../../templates/universal/benefits-review-template.md).
Selection context: Stakeholder domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md).

## OKR Scoring Guide
### Scoring Scale
- **0.0-0.3:** Significant challenges, major course correction needed
- **0.4-0.6:** Made progress but fell short of target
- **0.7-0.9:** Delivered most of the objective
- **1.0:** Exceeded expectations (rare, may indicate target was too easy)
### Target Scoring Philosophy
- **Aspirational OKR example:** 0.6-0.7 may be an agreed stretch-outcome convention; committed objectives require their agreed completion criteria
- **Stretch Goals:** Set ambitious targets that require 70% success rate
- **Growth Mindset:** Failure to achieve 100% should drive learning, not punishment

## OKR Best Practices
### Writing Effective Objectives
ā
**Do:**
- Make them inspirational and meaningful
- Focus on outcomes, not outputs
- Align with broader company strategy
- Keep them qualitative and aspirational
ā **Don't:**
- Write task lists or project descriptions
- Make them too operational or tactical
- Create too many objectives (max 3-5)
- Use vague or unmeasurable language
### Crafting Strong Key Results
ā
**Do:**
- Make them specific and measurable
- Set challenging but achievable targets
- Include baseline and target metrics
- Ensure they lead to the objective
ā **Don't:**
- Confuse activities with outcomes
- Set easy targets that guarantee success
- Create too many key results (max 3-4 per objective)
- Use subjective or opinion-based measures
### Implementation Tips
- **Start Small:** Begin with 2-3 objectives if new to OKRs
- **Iterate:** Refine your OKR process each quarter
- **Communicate:** Share progress transparently with stakeholders
- **Learn:** Use failures as learning opportunities
- **Align:** Ensure individual OKRs support team and company OKRs
