# DevOps Monitoring and Alerting Strategy Template
## When to Use
- When operating services require actionable telemetry and alerts.
- When service owners must connect metrics and logs to response thresholds and runbooks.
## When NOT to Use
- To alert on every available metric without an owner or response action.
- Do not report sample values, unsupported ratings, or missing data as verified performance. See [Metric without source](../../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#metric-source).
## Pairs Well With
- [Incident Response Template](../../../../../domains/measurement/industry-specializations/information-technology/cybersecurity/incident_response_template.md).
- [Problem Management Process Template](../../../../../domains/delivery/industry-specializations/information-technology/service-management/problem_management_process_template.md).
Selection context: Measurement domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md).
## Example implementation contract
Code, queries, configuration, versions, thresholds, and sample output illustrate the design; they are not a tested deployment bundle. Record the actual platform/version, supported dependencies, credentials source, least-privilege access, environment-specific values, and test results before use. Pin release artifacts and validate rollback and failure paths in the target environment. Never use sample secrets or sample approval results as operational evidence.
## Overview
This template provides a comprehensive framework for implementing monitoring and alerting strategies in DevOps environments, covering observability, incident response, and continuous improvement of system reliability and performance.
## Template Information
- **Methodology:** DevOps Monitoring and Observability
- **Purpose:** Establish comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and observability practices
- **Audience:** DevOps Engineers, SREs, Platform Teams, Development Teams
- **Timeline:** 8-12 weeks for full implementation
- **Prerequisites:** Infrastructure deployed, basic logging in place

## Monitoring Strategy Framework
### Observability Pillars
#### Three Pillars of Observability
```
Observability Architecture
Metrics (What is happening):
├── Application metrics (business and technical)
├── Infrastructure metrics (CPU, memory, disk, network)
├── Service metrics (latency, throughput, errors)
└── Custom metrics (domain-specific KPIs)
Logs (What happened):
├── Application logs (events, errors, warnings)
├── Infrastructure logs (system events, security)
├── Service logs (access, audit, performance)
└── Structured logging (JSON, key-value pairs)
Traces (How it happened):
├── Distributed tracing (request flow)
├── Service dependencies mapping
├── Performance bottleneck identification
└── Error propagation tracking
```
#### Monitoring Levels
| Level | Focus | Tools | Frequency | Stakeholders |
|-------|-------|-------|-----------|--------------|
| Business | KPIs, SLAs, User Experience | Dashboards, Reports | Real-time/Daily | Executives, Product |
| Application | Feature performance, Errors | APM, Custom metrics | Real-time | Development, Product |
| Service | API health, Dependencies | Service mesh, Synthetic | Real-time | DevOps, Platform |
| Infrastructure | Resources, Capacity | System monitoring | Real-time | Infrastructure, DevOps |
### Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
#### SLO Definition Framework
```yaml
# Service Level Objectives Template
service_slos:
user_facing_service:
availability:
definition: "Percentage of successful requests"
target: "99.9%"
measurement_window: "30 days"
error_budget: "0.1% (43.2 minutes/month)"
latency:
definition: "95th percentile response time"
target: "< 200ms"
measurement_window: "5 minutes"
error_budget: "5% of requests > 200ms"
throughput:
definition: "Requests per second capacity"
target: "> 1000 RPS"
measurement_window: "1 minute"
error_budget: "< 1000 RPS for 5% of time"
data_processing_service:
completeness:
definition: "Percentage of data successfully processed"
target: "99.95%"
measurement_window: "24 hours"
error_budget: "0.05% data loss"
freshness:
definition: "Data processing latency"
target: "< 15 minutes"
measurement_window: "1 hour"
error_budget: "> 15 minutes for 1% of data"
```
#### Error Budget Management
```
Error Budget Calculation and Management
Error Budget = (1 - SLO) × Time Period
Example for 99.9% availability SLO:
├── Monthly error budget: 0.1% × 30 days = 43.2 minutes
├── Weekly error budget: 0.1% × 7 days = 10.08 minutes
├── Daily error budget: 0.1% × 1 day = 1.44 minutes
└── Hourly error budget: 0.1% × 1 hour = 3.6 seconds
Error Budget Policies:
├── > 90% remaining: Focus on new features
├── 50-90% remaining: Balance features and reliability
├── 10-50% remaining: Prioritize reliability work
└── < 10% remaining: Freeze feature releases
```
