# Business Requirements Document (BRD) Template

## When to Use

- During discovery and planning when business outcomes need traceable requirements.
- When stakeholders need agreement on process changes, business rules, and acceptance expectations.

## When NOT to Use

- To prescribe a technical design before business needs have been agreed.
- Do not represent attendance, distribution, or silence as stakeholder agreement. See [Stakeholder broadcast](../../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#stakeholder-broadcast).

## Pairs Well With

- [Requirements Specification Template](../../../../../domains/uncertainty/industry-specializations/information-technology/software-development/requirements_specification_template.md).
- [Requirements Traceability Matrix Template](../../../../../domains/delivery/templates/traditional/Traditional/Process_Groups/Executing/requirements_traceability_matrix_template.md).

Selection context: Measurement domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md).

## Guidelines for Completing This Template

1. **Be Specific**: Avoid vague or ambiguous requirements. Each requirement should be specific, measurable, and testable.
2. **Focus on Business Needs**: This document should focus on what the business needs, not how it will be technically implemented.
3. **Use Simple Language**: Avoid technical jargon unless necessary. The document should be understandable by all stakeholders.
4. **Prioritize Requirements**: Clearly indicate the priority of each requirement to guide implementation decisions.
5. **Include Measurable Criteria**: Every requirement should have clear acceptance criteria or a way to measure success.
6. **Validate with Stakeholders**: Ensure all requirements are validated with relevant stakeholders before finalizing.
7. **Document Assumptions**: Clearly document all assumptions made during the requirements gathering process.
8. **Consider Constraints**: Document any constraints that may limit solution options.
9. **Maintain Traceability**: Ensure requirements can be traced back to business objectives and forward to design elements.
10. **Keep Updated**: This document should be maintained and updated as requirements evolve throughout the project lifecycle.
