--- title: "Agile Release Plan Template" methodology: "universal" complexity: "advanced" owner: "mirichard" updated: "2026-09-19" primary_principles: ["adaptability", "value-focus"] secondary_principles: ["systems-thinking", "stakeholder-engagement"] principle_rationale: "Connects adaptable release decisions to value, dependencies, and stakeholder needs." --- # Agile Release Plan Template ## When to Use - During Agile planning when a product needs a release-level forecast across iterations. - When several features or teams require capacity, quality, and dependency coordination before release. ## When NOT to Use - To turn a release forecast into a fixed sprint-scope commitment. - Do not waive essential controls solely because delivery is Agile, hybrid, or time-constrained. See [Tailoring by omission](../../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#tailoring-omission). ## Pairs Well With - [Product Backlog Template](../../../../../domains/delivery/templates/agile/product_backlog_template.md). - [Release Management Template](../../../../../domains/measurement/methodology-frameworks/emerging-methods/devops/release_management_template.md). Selection context: Delivery domain; universal methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md). ## Iterative release cadence Use the [release cadence guide](../../../../../docs/delivery/release-cadence-guide.md) to choose time-based, flow-based or coordinated delivery. In a time-based approach, the release window is a planning opportunity, not authority to ship an unready increment. In a flow-based approach, release a ready increment when approvals, dependencies and operational support permit; keep any agreed coordination windows. Link each increment to the existing [release management record](../../../../../domains/measurement/methodology-frameworks/emerging-methods/devops/release_management_template.md#continuous-delivery-increment-record), including the value hypothesis, candidate, acceptance evidence, rollout/recovery decision and next feedback review. Sprint boundaries do not require a production release. Closing an increment does not end product ownership or ongoing benefits measurement. ## Scrum tailoring These worksheets and suggested agendas are optional practices. In Scrum, the Developers own the plan for delivering the Sprint Goal; selected work is a forecast that can be adapted. A Definition of Ready and story points are optional team practices. Use the product Definition of Done consistently, and treat the Sprint Review as inspection and adaptation rather than a release-approval gate. See the [Scrum Guide](https://scrumguides.org/scrum-guide.html). ## Release Information - **Product/Project Name**: [Enter Product Name] - **Release Version**: [e.g., v2.0] - **Product Owner**: [Name] - **Scrum Master**: [Name] - **Release Manager**: [Name] - **Planning Date**: [Date] - **Status**: [Draft/Approved/Active] ## 1.
