# LeSS Overall Product Backlog Management Template

## When to Use

- When multiple LeSS teams need one ordered backlog for the same product.
- When a Product Owner must balance whole-product priorities and shared refinement.

## When NOT to Use

- To maintain separate team backlogs that obscure the product's true ordering.
- Do not treat completed metadata or a filled checklist as evidence that the underlying work is done. See [Metadata theater](../../../../../../docs/principles/anti-patterns.md#metadata-theater).

## Pairs Well With

- [Less Sprint Planning Template](../../../../../../domains/delivery/methodology-frameworks/agile-scrum/scaling-frameworks/less/less_sprint_planning_template.md).
- [User Story Template](../../../../../../domains/uncertainty/role-based-toolkits/product-owner/user-story-template.md).

Selection context: Delivery domain; agile methodology; advanced complexity. Match the situations above to project phase, risk, team size, and industry using the [decision-engine context model](../../../../../../meta/architecture-research/800-801-context-assessment-model.md).

Use one defined product, shared Product Backlog and integrated product outcome. Coordination techniques and agenda durations here are optional facilitation examples, not additional mandatory roles or events. Adapt them consistently with the [LeSS framework](https://less.works/less/framework).

## Overview
This template provides guidance for managing a unified Product Backlog in a LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum) environment. The goal is to ensure that all teams work from a coherent set of priorities, aligning with the product vision and strategy while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to change.

## Template Information

- **Scope:** One Product Backlog for the defined product
- **Goal:** Align teams on business priorities and product vision
- **Participants:** Product Owner, Product Management, Stakeholders
- **Update Frequency:** Continuous with formal reviews every sprint

---

## Product Backlog Structure

### Product Backlog Item (PBI) Attributes
Each PBI should have the following attributes:

- **ID:** Unique identifier for tracking
- **Title:** Brief descriptive title
- **Description:** Detailed description of the PBI
- **Priority:** Business value and order of implementation
- **Size/Estimate:** High-level effort in story points
- **Acceptance Criteria:** Conditions for acceptance
- **Dependencies:** Other PBIs or external dependencies
- **Status:** Current status (e.g., Backlog, In Progress, Done)

3. **Estimate PBIs**
   - Size items using story points
   - Break down large items if necessary

4. **Identify Dependencies**
   - Note dependencies between PBIs or teams
   - Update dependency maps as needed

### Stakeholder Engagement
Engage stakeholders regularly to ensure alignment and gather feedback.

- **Stakeholder Demos:** After major releases or milestones
